Mountain range of volcanic origin in New
South Wales, Australia. Siding Spring
Mountain 859 m/2,819 ft is the site of an
observatory; the Breadknife is a 90-m/300-ft
high rock only 1.5 m/5 ft wide; the highest
point is Mount Exmouth 1,228 m/4,030 ft. The
name is Aboriginal and means `broken-up small
mountains'.
